After 30 years, Scott has decided to retire and has passed the torch to long time employees Dan Feehan & Brian Wilbur. beck’s is still serving fine food to good friends and countless new friends as well! We are happy to say Beck’s is a place where the companionship & camaraderie of a local tavern seamlessly connect with kindness and the nourishment of plentiful portions found in a family restaurant. Little Nan’s cooking was how she expressed her love, and her meals were always fulfilling, authentic & plentiful! From his afternoons with Little Nan, Scott learned how much better great food can be when it is served with two goals: (1) to nourish and (2) to express kindness and love to your guests. She would greet Scott with a warm hug and “are you hungry?” That question never got answered because Nan was already busy in the kitchen preparing him a meal. Little Nan was 4’ 8”, Italian and an amazing cook. Before many of his shifts, he would stop in to see his Little Nan who lived nearby. Just before opening Beck’s, Scott was a student at Towson University and bartended at the Crab Shanty in Ellicott City, MD. The companionship and camaraderie of his neighborhood tavern inspired Scott and Brian to create a similar “neighborhood tavern” in Sykesville when they set out to purchase what is now E. Granddad Beck was liked by most everyone he met so it made sense when he purchased a local neighborhood tavern in Lansdowne, MD and called it Ernie’s Tavern. He was a generous, easy-going man who offered hospitality and companionship to anyone who walked in the door. ![]() Their granddad drove trucks for Shell Oil during the day and bartended in the evenings. Scott & Brian named the restaurant after their father, Ernest William Beck, Jr., their granddad Ernest William and their great, great grandfather, Ernst Wilhelm. Beck’s is a testament to a family’s love of food and a belief in being kind and generous towards others. W. Beck’s has been serving fine food to good friends on Main Street in Sykesville, MD for 30 years. Founded by brothers Scott & Brian Beck in 1992, E.

Summer Wine – gold-centred alpine auricula Piers Telford – a gold-centred alpine auricula Glenelg – a show-fancy green-edged auricula ![]() As Sacheverell Sitwell once wrote, “The perfection of a stage auricula is that of the most exquisite Meissen porcelain or of the most lovely silk stuffs of Isfahan and yet it is a living growing thing.” Beyond their aesthetic appeal, Patricia is interested in the political, religious, cultural and economic history of the auricula, but the best starting point to commence your relationship with this fascinating plant is to feast your eyes upon the dizzying collective spectacle of star performers gathered in an auricula theatre. Known variously in the past as ricklers, painted ladies and bears’ ears, auriculas come in different classes, show auriculas, alpines, doubles, stripes and borders – each class containing a vast diversity of variants. In the nineteenth century, Henry Mayhew wrote of the weavers of Spitalfields that “their love of flowers to this day is a strongly marked characteristic of the class.” and, in 1840, Edward Church who lived in Spital Sq recorded that “the weavers were almost the only botanists of their day in the metropolis.” It was this enthusiasm that maintained a regular flower market in Bethnal Green which eventually segued into the Columbia Rd Flower Market of our day. ![]() These events were recorded as taking place in Spitalfields with prizes such as a copper kettle or a ladle and, after the day’s judging, the plants were all placed upon a long table where the contests sat to enjoy a meal together known as “a shilling ordinary.” In 1795, John Thelwall, son of a Spitalfields silk mercer wrote, “I remember the time myself when a man who was a tolerable workman in the fields had generally beside the apartment in which he carried on his vocation, a small summer house and a narrow slip of a garden at the outskirts of the town where he spent his Monday either in flying his pigeons or raising his tulips.” Auriculas were included alongside tulips among those prized species known as the “Floristry Flowers,” plants renowned for their status, which were grown for competition by flower fanciers at “Florists’ Feasts,” the precursors of the modern flower show. ![]() Yet they’re not hard to grow and it’s very relaxing, the perfect antidote to writing, because when you are stuck for an idea you can always tend your auriculas.” Patricia taught herself old French and Latin to research the history of the auricula, but the summit of her investigation was when she reached the top of the Kitzbüheler Horn, high in the Austrian Alps where the ancestor plants of the cultivated varieties are to be found.Īuriculas were first recorded in England in the Elizabethan period as a passtime of the elite but it was in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries that they became a widespread passion amongst horticulturalists of all classes. “They are much more like pets than plants,” Patricia admitted to me as we stood in her greenhouse surrounded by seedlings, “because you have to look after them daily, feed them twice a week in the growing season, remove offshoots and repot them once a year. You only have to cast your eyes upon the wonder of an auricula theatre filled with specimens in bloom in Patricia’s Sussex garden to understand why these most artificial of flowers can hold you in thrall with the infinite variety of their colour and form. She believes that the Huguenots brought them here more than three centuries ago, perhaps snatching a twist of seeds as they fled their homeland and then cultivating them in the enclosed gardens of the merchants’ grand houses, and in the weavers’ yards and allotments, thus initiating a passionate culture of domestic horticulture among the working people of the East End which endures to this day. In horticultural lore, auriculas have always been associated with Spitalfields and writer Patricia Cleveland-Peck has a mission to bring them back again. ![]() ![]() Imported clips are displayed in the lower left, preview is in the top center and settings are on the right.īy default, all settings are turned off so you don’t change something by accident. This is the main operating screen for Topaz Video AI. Or, click the Browse button and navigate to a folder. Drag one or more video clips into this panel. When you first open the application, this screen appears. I saw this problem on three different computers. With no other applications running, the installer warned that it was “Waiting for other installations to complete.” After waiting ten minutes or so, the installation finally completed. On an Intel iMac, the installer hangs regardless of what you do with this second warning. On the M1 MacBook Pro, leaving this second warning open would start the installation, closing it would hang the install. Upgrading doesn’t work as well.Īfter beginning the update process, the installer displays a screen saying: “Close Applications and Install.” When I clicked this, it immediately displayed this same message a second time. The software also notifies you, after you start the app, when an upgrade is available. Installation is straight-forward and works as you would expect. NOTE: Here’s a one-page PDF of all my test results.ĭownloads are from the TopazLabs website. Mostly a note to myself on something I wanted to write about The smaller this number, the more consistent the two test durations For example, a ten-second clip that took a minute to process means that if that clip were one-minute long the processing time would be six minutes. Time to Convert: This converts actual results into normalized results. The duration of the source clip in minutes and seconds (mm:ss) (For example, “Deint.” means “deinterlace”.) A somewhat cryptic description of what I did. I only ran those once because, over time, I realized the app did not vary much in how long it took to process a task. NOTE: There were four tests which ran a ridiculously long time. The most important column has numbers in bold: “Time to Convert 1:00 of Media.” This normalizes the results of each task so that regardless of how long the source clip is, we can compare results between tests. I created a series of 24 tests for the software, ran each test twice and averaged the results in this table. All media was stored on the internal drive of my Mac. I was using the latest version of Topaz Video AI: v3.1.11. I tested Video AI on an M1 Pro 16″ MacBook Pro running macOS Ventura 13.3. Would I recommend the program? Yes, but be sure you have a fast computer to run it on. What it has problems with can be solved using other tools. A “roadmap” is not a tutorial.Ĭlearly, like all software wrapped around AI, Topaz Video AI is a work in progress. For instance, an explanation on how to create super slow motion is found in the online Product Roadmap which makes no sense. In addition to image stabilization, Video AI has other issues such as: confusing presets, long processing times on slower systems and a lack of clear guidance providing a recommended way to accomplish a task. This is not a good app to use for stabilization. Premiere Pro yields results similar to FCP. It takes – I did the tests – up to 53 times longer to stabilize a clip in Video AI than in Final Cut Pro. Frankly, stabilization is a complete mess. The slowmo created by Video AI is far better than optical flow, with consistent and clear details. While not generally used for drama, it makes action and sports footage much more “real” and clear. This gives footage the feeling it was shot at high-frame rates. This adds back detail that was lost due to the small size of the original image. Up-scaling (also called “up-rezing” or “up-resing”).The deinterlacer in Topaz Video AI is outstanding and good enough on its own to justify purchasing the program. The key features in Topaz Video AI include: I’ve spent the last three days working with it and here’s what I learned. The folks at Topaz Labs gave me a one-month license to review the current version (3.1.11) of their software. All with the goal of improving image quality. Topaz Video AI is used for deinterlacing video, upscaling low-resolution video to a higher resolution, removing excessive motion blur and creating super smooth slow motion. But, when you learn how it works, it creates results that will drop your jaw to the floor. It requires serious computing power, takes time to process, and its interface can be confusing. UPDATE CAUTION (May 16, 2023): There is a bug in Topaz Video AI 3.2.5 which makes deinterlacing confusing. In any case, the path ended at a series of four kilns whose heyday had long since passed.Īpparently, these limekilns were used to “kiln” (smelt) limestone quarried from the canyon (note the Limekiln Falls fell over a limestone wall). The nice thing about this trail was that it was much quieter compared to the Falls Trail. One of the namesake limekilns at Limekiln State Park Next, I continued for another 10-15 minutes on the Kiln Trail passing through another grove of coastal redwoods before reaching the namesake lime kilns after which the state park got its name. When I had my fill of Limekiln Falls, I then returned to the Falls and Kiln Trail junction. Limekiln Falls Trail Description – optional side excursions So I believe this was one of those falls where it would be better on a cloudy day from a photography standpoint. On a sunny afternoon, there were a lot of shadows cast on the lower parts of the Limekiln Falls, which may impact photos. Looking straight up towards the top of Limekiln Falls during our visit in April 2015 Nonetheless, the end of the official trail was also a perfectly fine spot to enjoy the falls. I recalled that back on our first visit in 2003, we had to climb a wet and slippery fallen log on the opposite side of the creek, but this obstacle wasn’t there on our 2015 visit. Julie helping Tahia negotiate deadfall and boulder obstacles at the creek crossings near the base of Limekiln Fallsįinally after about 0.5 miles from the trailhead, we reached the base of the impressive Limekiln Falls, where there was a small cascade fronting the base of the main drop.īut in order to access the base of that main drop, we needed to do a little bit of scrambling. That said, we still had to help our daughter across those sections. However, in our 2015 visit, it seemed like logs and planks were thoughtfully placed to make the crossing easier. I had recalled in our visit back in 2003 that some of the crossings might have been tricky (in terms of trying to keep our socks dry) due to a higher flowing stream. ![]() Julie and Tahia hiking along Limekiln Creek en route to the Limekiln FallsĪs we turned right to go onto the Falls Trail, the trail narrowed and became more primitive as we immediately crossed the first of three unbridged creek crossings. This was where the trail then branched off from the Hare Creek Trail (we took the fork labeled “Kiln Trail” and “Falls Trail”). Hiking beyond the Limekiln Campgroundįrom there, we walked towards the end of the short lot then passed through a campground nestled beneath towering coastal redwoods while flanked by Limekiln Creek.īeyond the campground, we crossed the first sturdy footbridge. Our Limekiln Falls excursion began from a well-established parking lot behind a payment kiosk (see directions below). Limekiln Falls Trail Description – hiking to the waterfall That said, when it had low flow (like in our April 2015 visit see photo above), the falls had a split appearance that kind of reminded me of Burgess Falls in Tennessee. When Limekiln Falls had good flow (as pictured at the top of this page), Julie and I were treated to an impressive display of a large limestone wall draped with water as it nourished the moss growing from it with its moisture. We had visited Limekiln Falls in both high flow and in the early Spring during the fourth year of a multi-year drought. Limekiln Falls in low flow in the Spring of a drought year in April 2015 I’m guessing that its height was on the order of 75-100ft (though our Ann Marie Brown book said it was on the high end of that range). In addition to its limestone characteristic, Julie and I were quite impressed by its size. ![]() However, it also featured impressively tall coastal redwoods, a dark-sanded beach, and a set of historic kilns that gave the park its name.Īs for the waterfall itself, we thought of it as the Big Sur version of a limestone waterfall since we had seen quite a few of them further south in Southern California. Sitting in the Limekiln State Park, we thought this waterfall was perhaps the most compelling attraction in the reserve. Limekiln Falls (I’ve also seen it spelled Lime Kiln Falls) was a pretty neat diversion along the rugged Big Sur coast.
